Voici ce qu’avait à dire Frank quand je lui ai demandé de me parler de son band, Reaction.

La Naissance

Notre band est né lors d’un show de Dayglo Abortion en avril 2022. De mémoire, c’était à peu près le premier show où la salle était à pleine capacité après la pandémie : pratiquement tout le monde de la scène s’est présenté. Zach (guitare) et Math (drums) jouaient déjà ensemble depuis Backstreet Scums, et cherchaient à compléter un nouveau groupe. Louis était orphelin de band depuis qu’il avait quitté Unwanted Noise, deux ans auparavant. Pour Charles et moi (Frank), c’était une période plus au ralenti avec Ruffianz, alors on avait faim de musique. Je savais aussi que je pouvais drummer, jouer de la guitare et de la bass, mais chanter était mon point faible. La meilleure manière de m’améliorer, c’était de sauter à deux pieds joints, en plein dedans. Notre premier jam n’a pas tardé et les compositions s’enchaînaient rapidement. Quatre mois plus tard, nous faisions notre premier show au Punx Make Noise.

Musique

Depuis, nous avons enregistré et sorti nos six premières compositions en streaming et en cassette sur Pils Records. Trois ans plus tard, nous avons réenregistré trois de ces chansons ainsi que sept nouvelles, pour produire notre premier album de dix chansons (Pils Records, Dismantled Records, Under Attack Records). Cet album est sorti en octobre dernier, et nous en sommes particulièrement fiers.

Nous avons encore quelques shows qui s’en viennent en 2026, et nous allons aussi faire partie d’un album hommage à The Partisans, produit par Dismantled Records. Le plan serait aussi possiblement d’aller en Europe en 2027, mais il reste beaucoup de détails à régler avant que ce ne soit officiel. Sinon, même si on vient de sortir un album, les gars ont déjà commencé à écrire de nouveaux riffs, donc on n’est pas prêts de ralentir!

As part of the upcoming Buckfest Festival in March, I spoke with one of the bands from the line up: BALM Squad.

Who are your main musical influences, not just your favorite bands, but those that shape your sound?

If you asked each of us separately, you’d probably get a very different answer. We listen to a pretty wide range of bands similar to us, but I think of it’s a balanced mix between Oxymoron, Syndrome 81 and Poison Idea.

Tell us about a tour anecdote, something that happened before, during or after a show.

On our last tour out West, we had to start in Vancouver to meet up with Total Chaos and make our way back East. The problem was, just three days before the tour kicked off, we were playing Punx Make Noise in Quebec City. That left us with only three days to cross the entire country, meaning a couple of all-night drives.

While driving through Saskatchewan, our trailer lights went out in the middle of the night in a really heavy fog. Since we didn’t have much time to fuck around, I found the nearest trailer repair shop, about four hours north of the highway. It would’ve gotten us there just in time for the opening, but we didn’t realize just how far off the beaten track we actually were…

We drove for miles down a dirt road in thick ass fog, running on no sleep. Everyone was pretty stressed out and on edge, but at some point we passed through a town that claimed it was founded by poets or something like that. Between jokes about running off the road or getting kidnapped and murdered by religious cults, we were all pretty sleep deprived and joked that half the town spoke in rhymes and the other half in haikus, locking both sides in an eternal civil war.

Eventually, we found the shop, they fixed us up quickly and we made it to Vancouver just in time for the soundcheck.

Who is the best opening band from one of your shows?

We’ve played with a lot of great bands, but I’m going to use this question to shout out some of my favorites: Motherfuckers, Riefer Madness, Unwanted Noise, Willful Disobediance, The Ruffianz, The Defamed, Destuctive, Defaillance, The Hacked, Vestigio and Random Killing, only to name a few!

What other bands have each of you already played before?

My main project before BALM Squad was Whiskey Shits, with our current guitarist Moik on drums. I also played in The Adhaeros and Ripcordz. Moik played in The Adhaeros and in a Montreal band called Fister. Aaron has played in many bands, but off the top of my head, he played guitar for Alcohol Fueled and bass for Ciggie and The Darts. He also played the drums in a band called Magic Mommy. Ricky played bass for Dogma, and Griffin and Ricky both played in The Gormless before.

Which lesser-known bands would you recommend checking out, emerging ones if possible?

Some of these might not fall into the emerging or lesser-known category, but the albums that have been getting the most attention on my turntable recently are : Syndrome 81 (Prisons Imaginaires), La Inquisicion (LVX), Amyl and The Sniffers (Cartoon Darkness), Complete Control (We Want Your Drugs) and The Drips (Self Titled).

Have you ever been to Saguenay?

YEAH! I’m pretty sure it was last year. We went and had a blast (even though we were extremely hungover from the afterparty in Quebec City the night before, it didn’t take long for the energy of La Baie to get us back up and running again and we couldn’t wait to go back).

Do you prefer your poutine with cheese curds or shredded?

This is a trick question! I might be from Toronto, but I’ve lived in Montreal long enough to know that poutine isn’t poutine unless you use curds!

Notre band, The Ruffianz, est né en 2003 sur la rive sud de Montréal sans grandes aspirations. Nous avions le besoin de jouer quelque chose de vrai, qui nous ressemble. Après l’enregistrement de notre premier démo « Insanity’s a Full Time Job » et notre premier LP « Straight Outta Disorder« , et après avoir fait plusieurs shows locaux en plus de quelques uns de l’autre coté de la frontière, notre chanteur original Jesse Krawczyk a malheureusement décidé de quitter le band en 2008.

Nous nous sommes réunis pour quelques shows en 2013, sans plus. Malgré le fait que la plupart des chansons les plus populaires aient été écrites dans les premières années, ce n’est qu’une décennie plus tard que nous avons réalisé que nous avions un certain succès en Europe, entre autre. En effet, notre maison de disque Maniac Attack Records avait distribué notre CD un peu partout. Contre toute attente, les européens nous attendaient avec enthousiasme pour notre tournée européenne de 2018 avec Days of Rage (notre autre groupe), incluant trois spectacles sous la formule The Ruffianz.

Changement dans la formation

C’est ainsi que nous sommes revenus en force, avec Alex Aubin comme chanteur et Alex Loiselle (aka SS Alex) à la lead guitar. Depuis cette tournée, nous avons laissé de coté Days of Rage et mettons toute notre énergie sur The Ruffianz. Avec cette formule, nous croyons que notre dynamique est meilleure, soit avec Charles à la guitare plutôt qu’au chant, Frank au drum plutôt qu’à la guitare, et Alex au chant plutôt qu’au drum. Ça semble plus naturel de revenir aux sources.

2023 et 2024 bien remplis

Depuis, nous avons enregistré un nouvel album sorti en juin 2023 intitulé « Straight Outta Dystopia« , qui fait un clin d’œil au premier album. Juste après sa sortie, nous avons fait la promotion de l’album en retournant en Europe, cette fois-ci en visitant plus de pays que la dernière fois. Nous avons fait plusieurs shows dans des bars, des squats et des festivals dont Pod Parou en République Tchèque et Rebellion au Royaume-Uni. Plus récemment, l’été dernier, nous avons eu l’honneur de partir en tournée dans l’est du Canada avec les légendes de One Way System ainsi que nos frères Breakout de Paris. Cette tournée s’est terminée au Punx Make Noise et c’était épique, comme à chaque année. Le 1er novembre dernier, nous avons joué à Philadelphie dans le cadre d’un festival de deux jours, avec Cheap Sex, Lower Class Brats, Virus et plusieurs autres groupes.

Finir l’année en beauté

Ce mois-ci, nous serons à Ottawa pour le Pils Session Live en très bonne compagnie (Skull N Bones, Random Assault, Jail, Forx). Nous aurons aussi l’honneur d’être le dernier band à faire le Pils Session cette fin de semaine là, donc on n’arrête pas la machine!
