L’Olympia

Mission accomplie sans embuche. On arrive à destination, vers 18h00.

Frank Turner and The Sleeping Souls

Bon Jovi, Living On a Prayer! Ouf!

The Interrupters

In The Wild », Raised by Wolves.

J’aurais préféré qu’ils jouent Jailbird ou Let ‘em go.

She’s Kerosene

The Interrupters: Back in Quebec at last!

The Interrupters, finally back in Quebec. I was looking forward to the announcement of a tour. I knew it was coming, I just had to know where and when? It will finally be a joint tour with Frank Turner and The Sleeping Souls (folk punk songwriter from England), mainly in the US, with a few dates in Canada, including one in Montreal. I’m not a fan of folk music, but why not? In fact, I only knew him for one song that brought back good memories, but nothing more. It will be a total discovery.

Chuck Ragan

Each segment of the tour has a guest. For Montreal, it is Chuck Ragan, guitarist, and vocalist of the band Hot water music. He also has a prolific solo career in folk punk. This will be another discovery for me as I am not familiar with his music.

Price and availability of tickets

As the popularity of Interrupters has grown exponentially in the last few years, I’ve had a bit of a scare about the price and availability of tickets. Ever since the stories with Tickermaster and their systemic (oops…), what do I say, dynamic selling, it has been a little confusing what to expect. I’m not used to having to fight for tickets to shows. Fortunately, a simple link, posted on their Facebook page, brings us directly to the presale. I got my hands on two (2) tickets for a little less than $100.00, which is still reasonable. Now we just have to wait impatiently for May 5th.

The Big Day, Friday May 05, 2023

Finally, it’s the Big Day! I’m as excited as a little kid. I am a fan of Interrupters since their beginning. After seeing them every year, or almost every year, since 2014 (I only missed one date in Quebec), I have created a habit, even a tradition. After three (3) years of torment, I am more than due for a little visit from this band that, in my opinion, gives the best LIVE performances of the genre.

I took time off from the factory to focus exclusively on the show. I only want the positive today, Interrupters shows are sacred! Unfortunately, this time they « skipped » Quebec City, my city. They are « big » now, no time for the suburbs. So, for us, the incorruptibles, it will be a forced trip to Montreal. It’s a good thing, I love roadtrips. It’s a great way to keep the fun going. Indeed, the party starts as soon as we leave the house.

The Olympia

Mission accomplished without hitch. We arrive at our destination, around 18h00. The parking of the UQAM, an amount of 11,00$ well invested. It became my favorite spot, since it is situated in some minutes of all the rooms of spectacle which I frequent. Tonight, it’s at the Olympia. A big hall with a capacity of about 2400 seats, located at 1004 Sainte-Catherine Street East. I’m not used to and don’t have a great love for big halls. I was expecting to wait outside since it was sold out, but no, the entrance was quick.

The inflation of the merch

We still look at the merch but, for several shows, I realized that I unfortunately can not afford to support them. A T-shirt: 50,00$, a long sleeve: 65,00$, a hoodie: 80,00$ and so on. Inflation, proportional to the popularity of the band, the percentage, often high, that the venues take and surely other factors, have made the prices insane. I understand the fans (I’ve done much worse for bands), but I have to admit that I’m uncomfortable paying these prices.

Chuck Ragan

The show starts with Chuck Ragan’s performance. He shares the stage with another musician who accompanies him on pedal steel guitar and voice. He has a very nice voice, and the sound captures the emotion well. In short, a solid performance. I appreciate his voice, his music. He has talent and a nice presence on stage. On the other hand, I have a small doubt on the relevance of this sound, in first part of a festive ska show. I would have preferred a performance, like this one, in a more intimate context at the end of a drunken evening. The warmth and melancholy of the performance contrasts with the festive ska energy of Interrupters.

Frank Turner and The Sleeping Souls

We turn the energy up a notch. Many people came for the singer. He’s a professional entertainer, a charismatic man. He knows how to conquer a crowd without even playing a note. He speaks French very well and he is proud of it. I would have listened to him speak again and again, but he came with his band to play and sing. The sound is excellent. His music has a positive energy that reflects on the crowd that sings in chorus all over the room, I love it. I don’t have to wait long for him to play my song, Get Better. I can finally sing too. Definitely the best opening act I’ve seen at an Interrupters show.

The band leaves the stage. And as if an hour wasn’t enough, the crowd continues to sing the intermission song. Bon Jovi, Living On a Prayer! Whew! That’s not getting any younger. A funny moment that I don’t remember ever having experienced.

The Interrupters

Perfection

The lights close, the music of Ghost town of the Specials begins. They make us wait, the excitement rises. They make their entrance, and the party starts with Take back the power and Title holder. Two songs with catchy choruses and heartwarming lyrics. I can already use all the superlatives of the language to describe their performance. They are perfect.

Aimee

Aimee, the singer, is as impressive as ever. She has a beautiful voice, even powerful, which she masters well in show. She shows it to us, among other things, during the tones at the end of In The Mirror. She interacts a lot with the fans, with her gestures and her looks, and poses for their pictures. Today, I am far behind, but I have often taken advantage of her generosity. I know what others are going through right now. That little second of connection with an artist, an idol, where two humans express their gratitude to each other.

Classics and novelties

The « set » consists of many classics and new material. They still play many of my favorite songs, Turntable, White Noise, By My Side, but, the one I was looking forward to the most tonight, the big

hit from their latest album « In The Wild », Raised by Wolves. This song has all the criteria required for a ska-punk hit. A little musical masterpiece and what about the lyrics! I never experienced anything like this, I had a happy childhood, but the lyrics still get me. To hear the chorus sung by a whole crowd, it’s guaranteed thrills. They have a beautiful complicity between them which is communicated to the crowd. A united family of which we have the chance to be part for a few moments. I admit that I miss their look, their old « costume » of stage. It seems to me that it brought a « quaint » side that I liked a lot.

Afterthought and Alien

On the other hand, some questionable choices in the setlist had the effect of putting some to sleep and making others leave. Afterthought and Alien are, in my opinion, two songs that are far too soft. Emotional and moving lyrics, sure, but they bring down the energy level of the crowd. Aimee soloing on stage with her hair blowing in the wind, I found it more uncomfortable than touching. I would have preferred them to play Jailbird or Let ’em go.

She’s Kerosene

They save She’s Kerosene for last. The hit of hits, what a song! A fitting end to their talent. I’ve been waiting for a band like this since I discovered ska-punk (Operation Ivy) in 1994! I have followed their career and witnessed their rise, and I am very proud of their journey. They have come a long way since Montebello; their show will remain for me, unforgettable moments.

Quel bon timing! Trop excitée pour attendre l’album, comme je le fais d’habitude, j’écoute les premiers singles qui sont déjà sortis, Under the Streetlight, Doing Time et Brassic.

Premier single: Under the Streetlight

BOOM!

2 autres singles: Brassic, Doing Time

Chansons préférées: Under the Streetlight, Doing Time, See you Around.

My discovery 2022

Grade 2, my discovery of 2022. There are bands that we love, others that we adore, and then there are those, a notch above, that were made especially for us. The ones that come and get you from the very first moment. Grade 2 was that band for me this year, I first got hooked on their album released in 2017, on Contra records, Break the Routine. What an album! I abused it for a while, when all of sudden they announced a new album arriving in early 2023. What a good timing! Too excited to wait for the album, as usual, listen to the few first singles that were already out, Under the streetlight, Doing time and Brassic.

First single: Under the Streetlight

First single, first listen, Under the Streetlight, BOOM! Instant crush! I had the impression to have already known this song, like being reunited with an old friend. Then followed an abusive listening for a good part of the night. I am unable to stop listening to it. Everything is perfect in this song! I love the melody, the bass, the guitar, and especially the vocals! I like the gang vocals, which make me shiver every time. These vocals shared by the whole band add a strong sense of power to the song. For me, they create a sense of urgency to scream and wanting to be heard, which is the basis of punk rock, which I love.

2 other singles: Brassic, Doing Time

The next 2 gems, Brassic and Doing Time, also became my favorites from the first listen. Already, in these three songs, I recognized a lot of influences from bands I love. These two other singles give me an Old Firm Casuals vibe, but with a touch of newness and youth in the execution. It’s a good start to an album.

The question is, « How am I going to enjoy the other twelve as much? »

My other favorites

I didn’t really doubt it! I like the other songs just as much. My other favorites are Judgment Day, Celine (with its rock and roll vibe) and another song, which I really abused during my first few listens and still do, See you Around. 2 minutes 58 seconds of pure happiness! In addition to the music itself, which is excellent, it’s also the kind of lyrics that get me and that I enjoy singing at the top of my lungs. A text full of camaraderie and nostalgia for the good old days. And the ending, the organ, reminds me of my favorite Oi! band Argy Bargy.

A flawless album

This is a diversified and a complete album that alternates between short, fast and aggressive, longer (mid-tempo), festive and dancing songs. They knew how to integrate perfectly the influences of the pioneer bands of the genre, but bringing a touch of youth and freshness. An excellent band and an excellent album for fans of Oi, melodic punk, wohoho or simply good energetic and powerful music! Good PUNK ROCK!

Notice to all the promoters! Bring this band to town soon.
